Thursday Morning August 25th
2005 Divers woke up to find a Hurricane Warning had
been issued overnight by the the National Hurricane
Center (Miami) for the Southeast Florida Coast. Tropical
Storm Katrina was 90 miles off shore and threatened
to become a Hurricane before reaching Ft. Lauderdale.
The morning began under partly
cloudy skies and a light breeze. Hoping for the best
the divers began their practice dives while table workers
prepared to score the meet. Around 8 AM word came from
the pool manager that the pool would have to be closed
until the Hurricane Warning was lifted. That means the
earliest the meet will be able to Start in Saturday
morning. The storm was expected to pass over Ft. Lauderdale
Thursday evening.
While waiting for the hurricane
to pass divers had fun in the hotel with movies, food
and other activities. After the pool was closed some
of the teams went to the beach under the supervision
of Team Coaches. Hurricane Katrina came very close to
Fort Lauderdale then turned south and impacted Miami
and the Florida Keys. Still winds reached 91 miles per
hour in gust and all of Thursday and Friday were lost
for diving.
