2008
U.S. Olympic diving team head coach John Wingfield is the
director and associate head coach of USA Divings National
Training Center in Indianapolis. He has served in that role
since 2005, when the training center moved to Indianapolis.
John
coached three divers on the 2008 Olympic Team Then
19-year-old David Boudia, 18-year-old Thomas Finchum and
15-year-old Mary Beth Dunnichay. He has been key in developing
most of those divers up from the junior ranks, as they have
been with John for the most of their careers.
In 2007,
John was selected as a coach for USAs World Championship
and Pan American Games teams, as well as several Grand Prix
and World Series events.
At the
World Championships, he coached Boudia and Finchum to a
bronze medal in synchronized 10-meter at the FINA World
Championships in Melbourne, and Boudia won bronze individually
on 10-meter at the 2008 World Cup. Boudia and Finchum also
won gold at the Pan American Games and had a medal streak
of 10 consecutive meets (2 gold, four silver, four bronze)
from 2006-2007.
John
served as head coach of the U.S. Team at the 2006 World
Cup, where the U.S. had its best finish since 1988. Boudia
and Finchum claimed the silver in the 10-meter synchronized
diving event at the World Cup.
He was
named USA Divings Coach of the Year in both 2006 and
2007 and was selected by USA Divings Committee for
Competitive Excellence to attend the first FINA World Diving
Conference in Athens, Greece that same year in 2006. He
has written several educational articles for USA Divings
quarterly magazine. In 2006, John worked to create Jump-start,
an interactive CD that uses video and 3D animation to teach
coaches and divers the basic fundamental skills and conditioning
exercises needed in the developmental stages of the sport.
He also presents educational seminars at USA Divings
annual convention.
John
is also actively involved in the community. A safety-certified
coach member of USA Diving, he is a first aid and CPR instructor
for the American Safety and Health Institute. He consulted
with architectural design and construction teams for the
development of a natatorium at Fishers High School, a new
school in the Indianapolis area. John also volunteers
a number of hours a year to non-profit organizations.
He is
a member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education,
Recreation and Dance, as well as the American Red Cross
and the YMCA.
John
has bachelors degrees in management information systems
and health & physical education and a masters
degree in sport science from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
He spent 10 years coaching and teaching at Ball State University
before moving to Indianapolis in 1998 to begin working with
USA Diving, primarily as the coach of the Regional Training
Center until 2005, when Indianapolis became the home of
the National Training Center and he became director and
associate head coach.
