History Made At 2009 Junior Development Camp

DiveMeets Introduces 3L scoring

The camp was comprised of talented junior divers from across the country. The goal of the camp is to let highly qualified judges and coaches evaluate each diver and provide analysis for each diver. This in depth scrutiny isolates each divers current abilities, strengths and elements that need improving. In 2009 the camp introduced DiveMeets 3L scoring. The report is then given to the diver and the diver's primary coach. 3L scoring breaks each dive into 3 elements (hence the name 3L).

This is how 3L Scoring works:

  • The first 2 judges judge Element 1: " L1 Approach And Takeoff" this covers everything the diver does until his or her feet leave the board, platform, trampoline or floor-mat.
  • Judges 3 and 4 judge Element 2: " L2 Flight" everything the diver does after leaving the board, platform, trampoline or floor-mat until some part of their body comes in contact with the water, trampoline or floor-mat.
  • Judges 5 and 6 judge Element 3: " L3 Entry or landing" Everything the diver does after any part of their body makes contact with the water, platform, trampoline or floor mat.
  • We also used a 7th judge who scored the "Overall Appearance" of the dive or dryland jumps.

The value of 3L Scoring is demonstrated in the simplicity of this report. The next page list all divers and all events. Click on an event to see the actual dive sheet with scores. The 3L dive sheet serves as a analysis of each dive. Beside each dive sheet is a list of the judges for that event. Click on a judge's name to see the criteria each judge used for judging their part of the dive or dryland jump. Every judge has his or her own list of priorities when evaluating a diver. From the report you will see the importance of learning every aspect of a dive. The objective is to convey to the divers the necessity of mastering all parts of a dive. A truly competitive diver must realize judges look at all parts of a dive.

Special thanks to John Wingfeild and Steve Foley for their planing and management of the camp and to Sheliagh Boudia for her indispensable work at the camp and in the formatting of this report. Gratitude is also given to John Proctor, Buck Smith and Dr. Michele Mitchell whom worked with DiveMeets Kelly Jackman contributing expert observations and imputes during early development for 3L Judging.
